Helen Marie (Shirrell) Mattina peacefully passed in the early hours of October 3rd, 2026. She lived in St. Louis, Missouri most of her days but returned to Farmington, Missouri, where she was born and raised, to live the remainder of her life. Her sons had the honor to be at her side when she took her last breath.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Helen Melissa (Worley) Shirrell and Noah Ray Shirrell. She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Anthony Salvatore Mattina; her children Mark (Jennifer) Mattina and Michael (Alissa) Mattina; her grandchildren Parker, Ava, Antonio, Sebastien, and Kaladin; and her siblings James Ray Shirrell and Frances Mae (Shirrell) Laney.
Helen was raised in Farmington on a small farm on the edge of town with her brother and sister. She graduated from Farmington High School and moved to St. Louis to pursue a 30 plus year career in medicine. There she met Tony and they married shortly after.
They lived in St Louis but purchased a vacation home at Lake Tishomingo in Hillsboro in the 1970s where she spent almost every summer with family and friends.
Helen and Tony began traveling to Italy every few years starting in 2001 where they met distant members of the Mattina family and made many new friends. Tony and Helen even became dual citizens of Italy in the mid-2010s.
Everyone whose life she touched would describe her as having a positive mindset, a giving heart, and infinite patience.
The family will plan a celebration of life for a future date to be determined.
