James Preston Womack of Farmington passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at his home at the age of 68. He was born in Ironton on January 8, 1958, to the late James Edwin Womack and Dorothy Mildred (Boyd) Womack. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Katie Womack; his sister, Dawn S. Womack; his nephew, Brian Medley; his paternal grandparents, Frederick Preston Womack and Mabel (Mayberry) Womack; “Aunt” Ruth (Queen) Womack; and maternal grandparents, Harvey Boyd and Verna (McDaniel) Barr.
James was a 1976 graduate of Farmington High School and went on to University of Missouri in Columbia (Mizzou) where he attained a master’s degree in social work. He began his career working at Southeast Mental Health State Hospital #4 as a social worker until October 21, 2011. Beginning that same year, he began maintaining a private practice until fully retiring in 2024. He was a member of St. Francois Masonic Lodge #234 at Libertyville where he was past master. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite in St. Louis and former board member and board chairman of the Growing Room Pre-School in Farmington. There was a group of former fellow boy scouts that he still enjoyed fishing with, as well as other special friends that he fished with every year. His weekly ritual was golfing every Sunday with his brother-in-law, Ron and friends. Most importantly, James was a dedicated family man who genuinely loved life and spending time with those he loved.
James often remarked that his profession gave him a great deal of satisfaction because he enjoyed helping people improve their relationships. He was well respected in the Farmington community.

Also surviving is one daughter, Sarah Christine Womack; his special dog, Lily; siblings, Nancy (Terry) Medley and David (Marlene) Womack; nieces and nephews, Patrick (Michelle) Medley, James Medley and Craig (Angel Houston) Medley, David (Yasmina Escalante) Womack and Shelley (Dan) Womack; sisters-in-law, Lisa (Ron) Bretz and Cynthia (Rob) Judah and their children, Tony Bretz, Nick (Brandon) Bretz, Mary Bretz and Annie Shannon and Tyson Judah; other extended family and many good friends.
