Joan Kathleen (Effan) Hickman entered eternal rest on August 29th, 2026, at Southbrook Skilled Nursing Home at the age of 86. She was born on March 3, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Harry and Wilma (Propst) Efffan.

Joan is survived by her children John (Mary) Hickman of Doe Run, Kim (Jeff) Jennings of Ste. Genevieve, Becky Long of Branson, Missouri, and Mark Hickman also of Doe Run; her grandchildren, Amanda (Tim) Sheets, Josh (Becca) Hickman, Alex Long, and Malayna Hickman; great grandchildren, Tucker Sheets, Brylee Hickman, Hadley Sheets, Brayden Hickman, Levi Hickman and Miles Miller; her sister, Mary Hull of Farmington as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Wilma Effan, her husband of 52 years, Marvin Hickman; her daughter, Janice Hickman, her brother John (Jack) Jones, and grandson, Adam Jennings.

Joan was a nurse for many years at the Farmington State Hospital and BJC Healthcare. Joan was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Farmington. Joan’s love and care for her family was at the center of her life; she loved to prepare and host large family gatherings and make each and every holiday special. She was especially known for her fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, pies and cheesecake as just a few of her specialties. She will be remembered for her kind presence and compassionate disposition, touching the lives of all that she knew.

A visitation will be held Saturday, September 5, 2026 at Cozean Memorial Chapel beginning at 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. in the Cozean Chapel. Interment will follow at Hillview Memorial Gardens. Memorials, if desired, may be made in Joan’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in care of the funeral home.
