Thomas William Detjen, affectionately known as “Big Tom,” passed away on November 19 at the age of 65. Born to William and Marcia Detjen, Tom lived his life with strength, purpose, and a heart overflowing with generosity. A mighty man in both stature and spirit, he was truly one of a kind.

A proud 1979 graduate of Farmington High School, Tom was a legendary athlete who excelled in football, wrestling, and track. Admired by coaches, teachers, and classmates alike, he was named the 1979 Athlete of the Year – a reflection not only of his talent, but of his dedication and the respect, he earned from all who knew him.

Tom received an academic scholarship to college, where he continued his athletic journey by playing college football. His commitment to honor and service carried him into the United States Army, where he served with distinction. During his military career, Tom earned numerous awards and honors recognizing his expertise in marksmanship, paratrooping, leadership, and recruitment—achieving some of the highest honors available in his field.

Beyond his accomplishments, Tom’s greatest legacy was his kindness. He was endlessly giving, always looking after his family, friends, and community. His presence made others feel safe, supported, and valued.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Danielle Detjen of U.S. Army Camp Zama in Zama City, Japan; his mother, Marcia Detjen of Farmington; his sister Vickie (Steve) Huckstep of Farmington; his brother Billy Detjen of Farmington; his sister Lori (Lyle) Rosburg of Jefferson City; his lifelong friend Perry Cashion; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends whom he loved deeply. He was preceded in death by his father, William Detjen.

A Celebration of Life with Military Honors will be held on Friday, December 5th at 1:00 PM at 3 Crosses Cowboy Church, 4560 Hwy O, Farmington, MO. Friends and family are welcome to join in honoring and remembering Big Tom.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Farmington Elks Veterans Fund, a cause close to Tom’s heart. Contributions will support local veterans in need—an enduring tribute to the service and compassion that defined his life. Big Tom will be remembered for his strength, his generosity, and the immeasurable love he shared with all who had the privilege of knowing him.
